Between 1931-1937 he was Minister of Welfare and in May 1937 he succeeded Stanley Boldwin as Prime Minister. Chamberlain was not successful in his foreign policy as in social reform, economics, and finance. He was convinced that he could settle German grievances by peaceful talks with Hitler. He thought the Munich Agreement that he reached with Germany, France and Italy was an indication for a "peace in our time". After Germany occupied Prague in March 1939 Chamberlain abandoned his appeasement policy. On May 10, 1940, Chamberlain resigned and was replaced by Winston Churchill.
